Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov has threatened to sue the firms responsible for keeping the city clean, which includes cleaning the snow, if they fail to meet their contractual obligations and clean the city's roads by Thursday morning.

The firms said 250 machines were working around the clock to clean the city's streets, when in fact, their number is less than 50, according to police reports, according to the mayor.

"The claims made by the concessionaires are not true and I won't allow them to be economical with the truth," Borissov said.

"If by tomorrow morning the city is not cleaned, I will not authorise the payment of a single lev to the concessionaires. If they have any complaints, I'll see them in court - the police records of how many snow-cleaning machines were out working will help us determine how big the bill is. I will only authorise payment for the work that has been done," he added.

The city hall is not responsible for cleaning the motorway exits from the Bulgaria capital, which are maintained by the state agency for roads, Borissov reminded reporters.

"I haven't slept the whole night, the taxi drivers have been very helpful with their reports regarding the situation. Short of getting behind the driving wheel of a snow-cleaning machine myself, there is not much else I can do," he added.
