Bulgarians said goodbye to the first year of EU membership and welcomed the new 2008 with colorful celebrations and lots of smiles.

Thousands of people celebrated at the central Batenberg square in Sofia despite the cold weather.

Five-hour long concert, fireworks and lots of champagne marked the beginning of the New Year.

People partied together with Eurovision representative duo Elitsa and Stundzhi, as well as pop star Vasil Naidenov and rock band D2.

Best known Bulgarian rappers Upsurt also electrified the crowd with their newest hits, performed at the biggest open air scene on the Balkans.

In an emotional address to the nation minutes before midnight, Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov said 2007 was a successful year marked by fulfilled European hopes. The achievements during the past year are also a reason for higher national self-esteem and for ambitious following of future goals, the President added.

The New 2008 Year promises to be fascinating!
