A total of 1,003 people were killed in about 8,000 car crashes that occurred since the beginning of the year on roads across Bulgaria, data of the country's Interior Ministry show.

The victims are 30 less in comparison to 2006 but it could rise as the condition of many of those injured remains critical, officials said.

"The lack of driving discipline is the main reason for the great number of accidents," said traffic police inspector Krassimir Kostov.

"It is all about the culture of driving. People must stop sitting behind he wheel while under the influence of alcohol," he added.
