Hundreds of cars are lining up in a kilometer-long queue at the Kulata checkpoint on Bulgaria's border with Greece, the Interior Ministry said on Saturday.

The checkpoint is working at full capacity, but still failing to deal with the large number of Bulgarians and some Romanians who have decided to celebrate New Year's Eve in Greece, the ministry said in a statement.

Traffic on Bulgarian motorways and roads has picked up on Saturday as people have started traveling to their chosen destinations early.

The traffic is most congested at the exits from capital Sofia, but conditions on all major roads are clear, although ice on the roads has been reported in mountainous regions and drivers have been cautioned to drive carefully.

Fog is blanketing areas in northern Bulgaria, including in the towns of Russe and Shumen, as well as the Rodopi mountains in the southern part of the country.
