Elitza & Stundzhi Bring Bulgaria's Success at Eurovision 2007 Finals

True, the Eurovision experience tends to be either sloppy or dire. But the intensity of Bulgaria's duo Elitsa and Stundzhi convinced many Europeans that the music jamboree still matters, at least as a medium of the traditional on a modern note. Amidst a period of effacement and chalga-risation of Bulgarian music, Elitsa and Stundzhi showed it is worth winning the battle of songcraft over showmanship. Amidst the business-as-usual contributions, they showed it is worth to be authentic and innovative. With political back-scratching, as always, determining the final results, Elitsa and Stundzhi did not make it to the top three. They made it to the hearts of millions of people.

Shocker Win for Housewife Over Folk Diva in Bulgaria's VIP Brother

Bulgaria's second edition of VIP Brother ended April 26 with the surprising narrow win of housewife who was literally unknown to the public before the show over one of the hottest pop-folk stars in the country. Winner Hristina joined the show later on to marry Big Brother winner Zdravko. When the time came to call the votes both singer Desislava and Hristina were equally shocked and dismayed at the news of who got the BGN 100,000 and the difference between the two was just once percent. Hristina most likely gained the sympathy of regular people who were angry with the way VIPs treated her in the house.

George Michael Sings "Freedom" for Bulgaria's Nurses in Libya

A mature and politically engaged George Michael took the stage in Sofia on May 28 in support of the plight of the five Bulgarian nurses jailed in Libya. Widely described as the most impatiently awaited gig of the year in Bulgaria, the concert was part of George Michael's "25 Live" concert tour, his first in over fifteen years. The British pop star cancelled a concert in Germany to come to Bulgaria and embrace the campaign "You are not alone", which aims to raise the international profile of the nurses, sentenced to death in Libya on bogus charges of intentionally infecting 426 children with AIDS. The huge scene and impressive visual effects of the show were something unseen in Bulgaria so far. "Freedom" , one of his best written, produced and sung songs, put a logical end to the show with a plea for the release of the Bulgarian women.
