The fifth annual Bulgarian Christmas charity has collected BGN 2,6 M so far, setting a new record, organizers announced.

Already established as a much-cherished tradition, the initiative proved to be once again a whooping success and is hoped to save the lives of thirty-seven sick Bulgarian children.

The figure grew sharply during a charity concert that took place at Ivan Vazov National Theatre on Christmas Day, the culmination of the initiative, which is held every year under the patronage of Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov.

The concert was broadcast live on the national TV channel and offered an irresistible bonus for the audience. A phone call at the price of BGN 1 gave everyone the chance to donate by chatting with Bulgaria's top stars, including sportsmen and artists.

Like in previous years, the Christmas concert marked the culmination of the initiative, but the phone lines will be left open until New Year's Eve. Those, who want to donate, may transfer money to the bank accounts of the initiative by the end of January.

More than 100 000 people have bought stickers for their cars that feature the campaign's teddy bear logo, while another 20 000 bought Christmas cards sold by the charity, organizers announced.

The funds are being collected for 37 children in need of urgent treatment and 14 children hospital wards that need better medical equipment.
