A solemn mass marking Christmas Eve was served by Bulgaria's Patriarch Maxim at Saint Alexander Nevski Cathedral in Sofia.

His Holiness read a passage from the Bible that proclaims the birth of Jesus Christ and prayed that the people preserved their faith, hope and love.

"Let us turn our faith into doings, as faith works through love, compassion, and help to those who are suffering and miserable," Patriarch Maxim told Christians who attended the mass.

Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov was traditionally present at the service.

At the end of the mass, the Patriarch blessed the meals that Bulgarians have prepared on the eve before the holy day.
