The condition of the bus driver, who caused the chain crash near Bulgaria's town of Simitli, was stabilized after he gained consciousness, doctors reported Wednesday.

The 39-year-old man suffered serious head injuries and had his elbow broken but has not undergone a surgery.

"The driver tried to overcome a vehicle on the road at a turn in a risky section without visibility. I could not explain such an action," the police chief in the town of Blagoevgard Konstantin Tityanov commented.

Three passengers were killed and another 14 injured in a chain crash between the bus, a minibus and several cars in Southwestern Bulgarian town late on Tuesday.

Two of the victims died on spot and the third one passed away on his way to a local hospital.

The life of another passenger involved in the hellish crash is still in danger.

Among the casualties is a one-year old child, whose father was killed in the crash. His mother suffered brain concussion.

The accident occurred after the bus, which was travelling from the capital city of Sofia to Sandanski, attempted a rash overtake only to bump into three cars and a minibus before toppling over.
