At least four people have been killed and another six injured in shooting incidents at religious centres in Colorado in the western US, BBC reported Monday.

A gunman opened fire at a training centre for missionaries in the state capital, Denver, killing two people. The shooter managed to run away from the scene.

Twelve hours later, one person was killed outside a church in Colorado Springs before the gunman was shot and killed by a security guard.

Police in the cities are looking for possible connections between the two deadly attacks.

The first shooting happened just after midnight, local time, at a dormitory in the Youth With a Mission centre, in the Denver suburb of Arvada.

Tiffany Johnson, 26, and Philip Crouse, 23, were killed and two men aged 22 and 23 were wounded, police said in a statement.

The later shooting in Colorado Springs occurred near the New Life Church, an evangelical congregation.

Officers said the description of the gunman in the second shooting was similar to the first - a white male wearing a dark hat and dark jacket.

A handgun was used in the Denver shooting, while a rifle was used in Colorado Springs, police said.

The Youth With a Mission organisation is reported to have a small office on the New Life Church site.
