Bulgarians ranked at the bottom of a survey, exploring attitudes to science news in European Union member states.
Three quarters of Bulgarians claim to have little or no interest in the subject, shows a new "Eurobarometer" survey. At the other end of the scale is Sweden, where 80% of the people say are interested in scientific research.
More than 62% of the public in the old 15 member states are interested in scientific research, compared with only 38 % in those member states that joined the bloc in 2004 and after, the survey says.
Europeans are generally satisfied with the presentation of science in the media, with more than a half expressing their contentment.
The majority of them consider the scientific information they get from the media to be reliable (65 %), objective (63 %) and useful (60 %).
At the same time there are complaints that the issues are difficult to understand (49 %), far from their concerns (45 %) and not entertaining (51%).
Television is the most popular (61 %) and most trusted (47 %) medium for information about science, shows the survey, which was launched at the First European Forum on Science Journalism in Barcelona, Spain.
