Power Grid Substation in Bulgaria Rocked by Blast

Society | November 29, 2007, Thursday // 00:00

An explosion rocked the power grid substation near the town of Veliko Tarnovo in northern Bulgaria, causing a fire but claiming no victims.

The blast on Thursday evening caused a voltage spike in the town of 200 000, with a fire breaking out subsequently.

Fire-fighters were initially wary of fighting the fire, the substation is still connected to the power grid. Eventually, the fire was doused without having to disconnect the substation, which would have plunged the town into total darkness.

The cause of the blast was not immediately clear, but German firm E.ON, which owns the regional power distribution, has already started an investigation.
