One hundred and fourteen new cases of HIV positive Bulgarians have been added to the deadly statistics since the beginning of the year, more than 80% of whom are men, officials said.

The newly registered cases take the total up to 803, but the real number of HIV positive Bulgarians is believed to exceed 10,000.

"The spread of the lethal disease marks a steady growth among men - 95 out of 114 at an average age of 32," Tonka Vurleva, head of the program for HIV/AIDS prevention with Bulgaria's Health Ministry told journalists on Tuesday.

By 2006 the sex ratio among HIV-infected Bulgarians stood at 67% men against 33% women.

When the virus is sexually transmitted, same sex contacts among men prove to carry great risk - 24% of all newly registered men with AIDS infection say they had homosexual contacts. The other most vulnerable group are drug addicts.

The HIV-infected Bulgarians are aged from 16 to 68.
