Planes can already take off and land at Sofia airport the thick fog that blanketed the capital city started to lift.

Flights due to arrive at Sofia airport were cancelled or redirected to the airports in Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas for several days due to the poor meteorological conditions.

The fog has prompted the country's Transport Ministry to activate contingency plans that will send flights to other airports in the country.

Forecasters predict the dense fog is to stay until Sunday.
