Russian Ambassador Anatolii Potapov awarded Friday Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov with Lomonosov Order for his merits in strengthening bilateral relations.

Potapov congratulated Borissov on his success at the recent local elections, adding that a big city needs a big and strong man as its mayor.

The ambassador thanked the mayor for his firm decision not to demolish the monument of the Soviet army that is in the centre of the capital.

With the order on his lapel, Borissov said that he and his rightist GERB party have never supported the policy of Euro-Atlantic integration at the cost of breaking good relations with Russia.

The Lomonosov order is an award of the veiled in mystery Russian academy of security and defence that was created in 1999 by Vladimir Putin, who was then chair of the security council of Russia. President of the academy since its establishment has been former KGB general Victor Shevchenko.
