As of November 1 Bulgaria's drivers are required to have their lights on during the day as well. The measure will remain in force for the duration of the winter months. Photo by Nadya Kotseva (Sofia Photo Agency)
The capital Sofia broke overnight a new unflattering record by registering a total of 228 traffic accidents, which left five people injured.
Twenty-three people were heavily injured, including three in critical condition, as 21 heavy car crashes were reported overnight across the country, according to the data of the country's Interior Ministry.
Bulgaria's road police has recently launched a campaign to enforce the wintertime driving regulations, which include having one's headlights on throughout the day as well as at night.
Despite the increasing number of surprise checks on the roads to hammer the point home, drivers are hardly putting in efforts to be more cautious.
