The heavy rains that hit central, western and southern Bulgaria over the weekend are expected to abate on Tuesday and temperatures, now ranging between 0C and 12C, will start to rise.

The capital Sofia saw some of the heaviest downpours, accompanied by thunderstorms, on Sunday - 23 litres per sq meter for two hours. The pouring rain is overwhelming the sewerage system's ability to drain the water, creating big puddles that are slowing down traffic throughout the city.

The rains are expected to abate on Tuesday and the sunshine will come out over the whole country with the mercury zooming up to 10C-15C during the weekend.

As the weather is warming up, forecasts don't miss to warn mountaineers of the high risk of avalanches, as melting snow is known to trigger them best.

The weather across the country will remain warm and dry by the end of the month, only to bring back the winter with a vengeance on December 2-4. Bulgaria will welcome the Christmas and New Year holidays covered with a thick blanket of snow.
