A monument of Yordan Radichkov, the most subtle and prolific Bulgarian writer of the previous century, was unveiled in the garden next to the National Art Gallery in Sofia on Wednesday.

The sculptor Prof. Emil Popov shared he wanted to capture the spirituality and magic that Radichkov carried in him and immortalized in his works.

The monument's inauguration was initiated by the association "Radichkov's friends", which includes prominent artists, writers, directors.

"This is the least we can do for him. This is how we, who were blessed by his friendship, bow our heads to his memory. I do hope that each and every person who passes near the monument - those who knew Radichkov and those who did not - will carry away with them a part of the light with which the Creator had gifted him," artist Svetlin Russev said.

Bulgaria bid farewell to Yordan Radichkov in January, 2004 when he passed away at 74 after a long illness.

Radichkov is one of Bulgaria's most prolific writers, known for his subtle parodies of the human nature and the communist regime, his mixture of what is real and what is magic. Many of his books have been translated into Russian, English, French, Spanish, German, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Finnish and other languages.

He has more than twenty-five books of prose to his credit - short stories, novellas and novels, as well as a number of plays.
