After a weekend of snows and high winds, the new week set in with heavy downpours only to bring more freezing cold temperatures, according to weather forecasts.

Temperatures will sharply drop on Wednesday, plunging to 4C below zero, and the cold spell will be here to stay by the end of the month.

Bulgaria's weather forecasting service warned that the country can expect significant rainfall and wet snow from Wednesday to Saturday.

Temperatures will rise for a short while on Saturday only to fall again on Sunday.

The first significant snowfalls on Saturday caused transport problems for motorists across Bulgaria, a sad reminder that just like any other year, authorities have been "surprised" by the weather and caught unprepared when it comes to having the snow removal machinery ready.
