Dozens of villages and thousands of people have been left without electricity and water after the first significant snowfall in Bulgaria at the weekend, Darik News reported on Sunday.

The worst hit were the regions in northeastern Bulgaria - Varna, Shumen and Dobrich, where a total of 33 villages are still without electricity, although the power supply was restored in 19 villages.

The water supply is yet to be restored in four villages in those regions, as well as the town of Kaspichan, near Shumen.

In Sliven region, southeastern Bulgaria, 14 villages are still without electricity and seven without water.

Though expected, the snowfall and the plunge in temperatures sparked traffic disruption all over Bulgaria.

Stranded busses and cargo trucks have been reported all over the country and the Shipka mountain pass had to be closed for several hours, while eight trucks were towed through.

A number of minor roads and mountain passes remain closed, but all major thoroughfares are open.

No traffic problems have been reported in Bulgaria's major cities and towns, although the worsening weather conditions have caused a jump in the number of car crashes, which left seven people dead overnight.
