Tropical Storm Noel, already the deadliest storm in the Atlantic this year, has strengthened to a Category 1 hurricane, the lowest grade on the Saffir-Simpson scale, the US National Hurricane Center said in an advisory on its website.
"Maximum sustained winds are near 130 km/hour with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next 24 hours, but Noel is expected to lose tropical characteristics and become a powerful extra-tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours," the centre said.
Noel is moving north-northeastward between the southeastern US and Bermuda, growing in size and a gale warning remains in effect for Bermuda. It is expected to continue on its path and eventually reach Nova Scotia in Canada.
Its death toll has already reached 108, chiefly in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, with one person reported dead in Jamaica.
Additionally, tens of thousands of people in Cuba have been forced to leave their homes because of flooding, while a state of emergency remains in effect in the Dominican Republic.
