Caribbean Storm Claims 81 Lives

Tropical Storm Noel claimed 81 lives in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica, heading for the Bahamas, Bloomberg reported.

The death toll could still rise, with Dominican authorities saying dozens of people were missing and more than 25,000 have been left homeless.

The flooding downed bridges, cut electricity and left tens of thousands of people in need of emergency rations.

With sustained winds of 95 kilometres per hour, Noel is expected to turn northeast and away from Florida after hitting the Bahamas, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in an advisory on its website.
