Nearly 20 000 drivers were caught drink-driving in Bulgaria during the first nine months this year, police announced, raising anew concerns over the raging war on wheels in the country.

A total of 8 000 had blood alcohol content above 0.12 while 11 000 were below this level, show figures, released by the police on Wednesday.

Another 3 000 drivers were stripped of licenses due to breaking speed limits.

Police announced they are likely to back a proposal for confiscating the vehicles of drivers, who sit behind the wheel without a license. The vehicles would be confiscated for a period of six months to one year.

Road accidents claimed the lives of more than 600 people until October this year.
