Bulgarians Get One Hour More of Sleep on Election Day

Society | October 27, 2007, Saturday // 00:00

Bulgarians will set clocks back one hour at 4.00 am sharp on October 28 when they are voting in nationwide local elections.

Even though the return to standard time will give Bulgarians one more hour of sleep, psychologists claim one needs a fortnight to adapt to the new rhythm.

In accordance with chronology rules installed by the Bulgarian government, the country switches to Daylight Saving Time for the period between March 27 to October 30 every year.

Bulgaria introduced the timesaving switch in summer and winter in 1979, almost seventy years after it was applied for the first time in Great Britain, in 1908.

Since 1981 European Community (EC) Directives have prescribed the start and end dates of summer time in member states. These are set as the last Sundays in March and October respectively.
