Heavy Rainfall Forecast for Bulgaria

Society | October 21, 2007, Sunday // 00:00

Large parts of Bulgaria should brace themselves for heavy rainfall over the next two days, Bulgaria's weather forecasters said on Friday.

Close to 30 litres per square meter are expected to fall throughout the country, peaking in central and southern Bulgaria at up to 80 litres per square meter.

In mountainous areas, some snow is expected to fall as an area of high pressure from the Mediterranean enters the country, turning to rain on Monday as temperatures rise.

The first snowfall on Saturday was one of the earliest in recent years, and the snow cover was reported at six centimetres in Vratsa and seven in Dragoman in western Bulgaria.

The weather forecasters have also warned that Bulgarians should brace themselves for a colder-than-usual winter, with temperatures rarely above the freezing point between December and February.
