Macedonian pop star Tose Proeski, who was killed in a car crash on a Croatian motorway in the early hours on Tuesday, was asleep in the passenger seat during the deadly accident, police said.

Police suspects the driver of the Volkswagen Tose Proeski was riding in to have caused the apparent high-speed crash.

Proeski's vehicle hit the back of a truck and crashed into the protective fence on the Zagreb to Belgrade highway near Nova Gradiska, 120 km (70 miles) east of Zagreb.

The government said October 17, the day of Proeski's funeral, would be a day of national mourning and awarded him the title "Honorable citizen of Macedonia".

The news of Proeski's sudden death shocked Macedonians and many people could be seen weeping in the streets in the Macedonian capital Skopje.
