UK Needs 95,000 New Homes for Migrants Each Year - Report

At least 95,000 houses will have to be built every year until 2020 to cope with the record influx of immigrants, an increase of 30% on the latest government estimate, the Daily Mail reported, citing an official research.

The research by the House of Commons Library is the equivalent of 260 new homes every day, the report comments.

The figures, in a paper seen by the Daily Mail, mean homes needed by migrants will swallow up 41% of the three million new properties Gordon Brown has promised to build by 2020, with UK residents being priced out of the market.

Over the next 13 years, immigrants will require 1.23 million houses, according to the research.

A separate paper by the House of Commons Library said an average of 19,000 houses were needed for migrants in the years between 1992 and 1997, when the Conservatives were last in power.

The figure has since rocketed to an average of 66,000 every year.

Between 1997 and 2005, the latest period for which figures are available, 592,000 houses were needed solely for migrants.
