Bulgarian top financier Nikola Damyanov, who was believed to be one of the targets of the notorious Marguins brothers, died Monday night after suffering a heart attack. He was 65.

Krassimir and Nikolay Marinov, dubbed the Marguins, and five suspected accomplices are standing trial on charges of plotting the murder of businessman Nikola Damyanov, reserve general Lyuben Gotsev and late underworld boss Ivan Todorov nicknamed Doktora.

An ambulance was called Monday night, but Damyanov died on his way to the hospital.

The businessman testified in October last year and denied to have known them.

Damyanov said he had no contacts either with his suspected assassins or any persons related to them.

Questioned by solicitors in the hall of Sofia City Court, the businessman said he was warned by two civil policemen of the assassination plot being cooked against him. He was advised to take security measures for his sake.

The jury heard also Damyanov claiming he never knew any of the two potential targets of the Marguins - General Lyuben Gotsev or Ivan Todorov, who was shot dead in broad daylight in central Sofia on February 22.
