A gala concert brought to an impressive end this year's Master Class of Bulgarian opera prima Raina Kabaivanska as she celebrated the 50th anniversary of her career.

The spectacular event brought together at Bulgaria hall on Thursday night the best performers of the class to the accompaniment of Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra. Crowned with the special participation of Raina Kabaivanska, the concert paid once again tribute to the legendary Luciano Pavarotti, a long-term and cherished friend of hers.

This was the seventh time that Kabaivanska, one of the most successful Madame Butterfly productions in history, gathered some of the most talented young singers in her master classes at the New Bulgarian University. The right to be included in this class was contested over by young performers from nine countries - Italy, Ukraine, Israel, Korea, Spain, Japan, Georgia, the South African Republic and, of course, Bulgaria.

Meanwhile an exhibition dedicated to the 50-year anniversary of the opera star career was inaugurated at Bulgaria Hall. Running under the title "Raina Kabaivanska - the divine", the exhibition combines 50 photographs of famous parts of the opera star.

The Bulgarian made her debut in 1959 in Italy with Puccini's opera "Il Tabarro". Decades later, at the age of 69, her last Tosca set a record, prompting talks of a living legend, a myth.

The role of Tosca, staged at more than 400 performances in the biggest and smallest theatres around the world, is the role that Kabaivanska is grateful the most for her popularity.

Critics say that the last 50 years have been marked by Callas and Kabaivanska and it's small wonder they set the two great singers side by side.
