Bulgaria joined Wednesday the celebrations of the European Day of Languages with a one-day conference on Multilingualism that took part in the Cervantes Centre in Sofia.
The head of the European Commission representation to the country Michael Humphreys opened the conference with a solemn speech.
"There is an Irish phrase, saying that if you do not have a language, you do not have a country," Humphreys said and added "Language is what we are this is why today we celebrate the European Day of Languages and multilingualism".
The conference included lectures from Bulgarian and foreign linguists, historians and psychologists. The topics varied from the poles of the Eurolect, language promotion, multilingualism, transliteration and even a case study on academic international exchange.
In the first part of the event special attention was turned to the lecture of Deputy Minister of Education and Science Ekaterina Vitkova. She spoke on the new challenges for foreign language teaching in Bulgaria.
