Society | September 24, 2007, Monday // 00:00

Every tenth Bulgarian prisoner is addicted to drugs, the head of the prisons in the country Petar Vassilev said on Monday.

This means that a total of 1,342 inmates in Bulgaria used drugs regularly.

Vassilev participated in an international conference for providing health services for imprisoned people.

The largest number of drug addicts is in the prisons in the coastal towns of Burgas and Varna, the capital Sofia and Stara Zagora.

The inmates use most of all heroin, cannabis and cocaine.

The prison cells in the Bulgarian prisons are overcrowded and the living standards there are very poor, Vassilev said.
