A second powerful earthquake hit Indonesia's island of Sumatra on Thursday, just a day after a strong tremor killed at least six people and destroyed dozens of buildings, BBC reported.

According to latest reports, Wednesday's quake was measured by US officials as magnitude 8.4, and the last tremor has been 7.7 on the Richter scale.

"Many buildings, weakened in the first tremor, have collapsed this morning," told the Mayor of one of the worst stricken city of Padang Fauzi Bahar.

Rescue teams are still searching for the dead bodies of more victims, local authorities said.

Despite several warnings since the first earthquake, there have been no tsunamis so far.

The initial quake sparked warnings across the Indian Ocean, but only a small wave surge hit Sumatra, causing little damage.

At least a dozen aftershocks have been felt and four tsunami warnings were declared during a period of 24 hours.

Thousands of people were reported to have spent the night sleeping in the open air in the areas of Benkulu and Padang after the previous quake left them terrified.
