Alex, possibly the smartest and most famous parrot ever, has died last Thursday at 31.
The bird was a research subject for 30 years for scientists at Harvard University and helped them conclude the species' intellect can match that of a five-year-old child. He had the amazing ability to learn language.
Alex, an African grey parrot, could count to six, differentiate colours and shapes and knew more than 100 words and even express frustration with repetitive scientific trials. He also occasionally instructed two other parrots at the lab to "talk better" if they mumbled, though it wasn't clear whether he was simply mimicking researchers.
Dr. Irene Pepperberg bought Alex from a pet store in 1977.
The cause of Alex's death was unknown. The African grey parrot's average life span is 50 years, Pepperberg said.
"It's devastating to lose an individual you've worked with pretty much every day for 30 years," Pepperberg told The Boston Globe.
Alex's advanced language and recognition skills revolutionised the understanding of the avian brain.
