The parents of the four-year-old Madeleine McCann are to be named as suspects by Portuguese police investigating the case of the British girl's disappearance, a family friend said Friday, cited by BBC.
The mother Kate McCann has already been questioned as a witness at a police station in a town in southern Portugal. The father Gerry is also to be interrogated until the end of the day.
"The couple continues to deny absolutely they had anything to do with their daughter's disappearance," the friend Clarence Mitchell declared.
If the couple are named as formal suspects they will gain more legal protection than if they are just questioned as witnesses. This would allow them to remain silent during questioning and to have legal representation, authorities explained.
Madeleine disappeared from the apartment room at the Portuguese Praia da Luz resort on 3 May while her parents were eating with friends at a nearby restaurant.
The family has campaigned internationally to secure the safe return of their daughter, including having a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI and securing support from football star David Beckham.
