Hurricane Felix killed four people in Nicaragua and destroyed thousands of houses in Central America before weakening into a tropical storm, BBC reported.

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said wind speeds had decreased to 85km/h (53mph) from 260km/h.

But the NHC warned that heavy rains were likely to produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.

Hurricane Felix was downgraded to a Category 3 storm after making landfall Tuesday morning in Nicaragua as a potentially disastrous Category 5, CNN reported.

Shortly before making landfall near Punta Gorda, Nicaragua, Felix regained its status as a Category 5 storm with 160 mph (257 km/h)sustained winds.

Hurricane Felix's devastation comes just two weeks after Hurricane Dean killed tens of people in the region.
