Record-breaking US aviator and adventurer Steve Fossett went missing on Monday evening in Nevada, a local newspaper reported.
Civilian air authorities have began a search for Fossett's blue and white aircraft, in which he was last seen leaving the Hilton Ranch south of Smith Valley, Carson Valley's Record-Courier daily said.
The search area covers hundreds of kilometres of rugged terrain and more aircraft will join the three that are already in the air.
Fossett, 63, is known for his penchant for world records, including for the fastest circumnavigation of the Earth as a sailor, solo balloonist and solo airplane pilot.
Over the past two months, he has been preparing his attempt to best the land speed record in Nevada.
