An earthquake measuring at least 6.8 in magnitude jolted Taiwan in the afternoon of April 1, killing five people and injuring more than 200 others, while igniting fires, cracking buildings and shutting down the subway system in the island's capital city.Local officials said the quake registered magnitude 6.8, but the U.S. Geological Survey estimated it higher, at 7.1. The shaking reminded many Taiwanese of the 7.6-magnitude quake in September 1999 that killed more than 2,000 people, destroyed 40,000 homes and shut down factories in Taiwan's crucial high-tech manufacturing industry, one of the largest in the world.
