Felix Turns into Category 2 Hurricane, Threatens Aruba

World | September 2, 2007, Sunday // 00:00

Tropical storm Felix, the sixth registered in the Caribbean this year, has strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with winds of up to 160 km/h.

The US National Hurricane Centre in Miami issued a hurricane warning for the islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao, where it is expected to make landfall within hours.

A tropical storm watch remains in effect for Jamaica, the NHC said.

The hurricane could strengthen further to Category 3 by mid-week, when it is expected to hit the continental mainland in Belize.

Belize has already been hit hard this hurricane season, when Category 5 Hurricane Dean left a trail of destruction last month.
