After a minute of grumpy skies Sofia saw a true torrential downpour on Saturday afternoon that shortly turned into a hailstorm.

The worst-hit districts were Nadezhda, Lyulin and Mladost, as well as the centre of the city.

The sizzling heat that swept Bulgaria for the most part of the summer came to an end and September set in with lower temperatures and rains.

The weekend brought scattered rain showers in western and northern Bulgaria, accompanied by thunderstorms.

Temperatures dropped sharply at the beginning of September with highs standing at 21-26C.
