The fires in Bulgaria's southeastern towns of Topolovgrad and Svilengrad were contained on Monday night, Darik News reported, citing the Haskovo Fire department head.

The flames blackened 110,000 decares of bushland and 24,750 decares of woods.

Two elderly people died in the fires and 72 houses were turned to ashes as the blazes were fanned by the wind and entered in five villages. A church, a school and the municipality buildings of the Filipovo and Prisadetz villages also burned down. At least a hundred other agricultural buildings and facilities were destroyed in the inferno.

Hundreds of domestic animals died in the fires, and the wood and coal reserves of several villages were consumed by the blazes.

The people, whose homes disappeared in the flames, were evacuated and temporary accommodated in sheds.

Twenty-two fire brigades and 75 fire-fighters fought the walls of fire for almost to days. At present, two fire brigades supervise the situation near the Sladun and Matochina villages and are ready to react immediately of new fires break out.
