Bulgarian tourism association BABTI said on Tuesday it extended until the end of the month the deadline for nominations in its campaign to find the country's most authentic national symbols.

Nominations can be made in three categories - natural monuments, historical and cultural heritage, foods and drinks.

"We want to find out the most proud Bulgarian creation, something on par with the Louver, Stonehenge, tango, siesta or matryoshka," BABTI said in a statement.

Voting proper will start next month and will be carried out online, as well as using special bulletins found via the Bulgarian Post, free of charge.

The campaign will conclude on Christmas Eve, with the winners to be announced in January.

The initiative is backed by the Bulgarian government and chosen symbols will become part of Bulgaria's international advertising campaigns.

Among the nominations are cape Kaliakra, mount Mussala and the Seven Lakes of Rila in the natural monuments category, as well as the ruins of Perperikon, the Tsarevets medieval fortress and the Cyrillic alphabet in the cultural heritage category.

Rakiya, Melnik wines, the banitza pastry and lukanka sausage are among the nominees in the food and drinks section.

The nominations can be seen and entered online on BABTI's website at www.infobulgaria.info.
