A powerful explosion at Romania's biggest petrochemical complex Oltchim left one dead and seven wounded, local media reported.

The Oltchim factory is located at the town of Ramnicu Valcea, central Romania.

The accident is believed to have been caused by a failure of the circulation pump that increased the pressure at one of the plastic reactors and triggered the blast.

Officials assured the blast led to no toxic leakage.

Three of the eight victims were in a severe condition as they suffered 90% burns.

One of them, a woman, died on her way to a Bucharest hospital.
