Perseid Meteor Shower Puts on Light Show Overnight in Bulgaria

Society | August 13, 2007, Monday // 00:00

Thousands of Bulgarians watched the spectacular Perseides annual meteor shower during the weekend.

The Perseids, which streak through the sky every summer, appeared brighter than usual because of a new moon.

Astronomers estimate that under ideal conditions, up to 80 meteors an hour - one every 45 seconds - were visible. Although the showers have already begun, they were at their maximum on Sunday night.

Like all meteor showers, this one gets its name from the constellation it appears to originate from. The showers actually occur when Earth intersects debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle. When the debris enters Earth's atmosphere, it ignites, causing a streak across the night sky.

The planet is passing through the dust-filled wake of the Swift-Tuttle, which was last near the Earth the early 1990s and will not return until 2126.
