UDF LEADERS IN PLOVDIV UNDER PRESSURE

Politics | June 24, 2001, Sunday // 00:00

The local leader of the UDF in Plovdiv, second largest city in Bulgaria, Spas Garnevski and the ardent supporters of Kostov from his close entourage lose their position in the regional organization after the election loss. Rank and file members of the UDF demanded resignation of all leaders on the night after the elections. That was the appeal of deputy mayor Nedyalko Genchev, who`s a vice-chairman in the UDF-Plovdiv, as well. He and the other deputy Angel Popisakov are representatives of the so-called `anti-Garnevski` wing among the local UDF leaders. They backed Stephan Sofianski suggestion concerning mass resignations and coalition with the King`s movement. Mayor, Dr Ivan Chomakov, who`s among the vehement opponents of Garnevski, also announced that UDF needs radical changes to survive and win back the people`s confidence.
