New York City Submerged after Torrential Downpour, Subway Paralyzed

World | August 9, 2007, Thursday // 00:00

A torrential downpour flooded the New York's subway system and highway tunnels on Wednesday, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The heavy rain flooded also local airports' runways.

The storm which grew into a tornado in Brooklyn, hit the city just before dawn.

By the morning rush hour, the subway system was paralysed when pumping stations became overwhelmed.

The failure renewed a debate over whether the network of pumps, sewers, and drains that protects the city's subways from flooding needs an overhaul.
