Heavy rains of up to 50 litres per sq meter are expected to hit western and northern Bulgaria on Sunday and Monday.

The capital Sofia and the towns of Plovdiv, Pleven and Montana face the biggest threat, weathermen warned.

The pouring rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, started in Sofia on Saturday afternoon, the second major precipitation since the beginning of the summer, which has been very dry throughout the country, giving rise to scores of wildfires.

The pouring rain is overwhelming the sewerage system's ability to drain the water, creating big puddles that are slowing down traffic throughout the city.

The rains are expected to abate on Tuesday and temperatures, now down by some 10C to 20C in the Danube plane, will start to rise.

Highs for August are set at between 35C-40C, which is above the average for this time of the year.
