Mexican archaeologists announced Saturday they have eventually found the remains of the powerful Aztec emperor Ahuizotl.

With the help of ground-penetrating radar the scientists have detected underground chambers the Mexican scientist discovered hollows in the ground and they believe this is the place where Ahuizotl was buried. If their hypothesis turns out to be true, this would be the first Aztec ruler's gravesite ever found.

As early as this fall, they archaeologists hope to enter the inner chambers - a damp, low-ceilinged space - and discover the ashes of Ahuizotl, who was likely cremated on a funeral pyre in 1502.

Ahuizotl ruled the Aztecs until the Christopher Columbus reached the shores of South America in 1492.

The find could provide an extraordinary window into Aztec civilization at its peak. Ahuizotl, was an empire-builder who extended the Aztecs' reach as far as Guatemala.
