A painting at the National Gallery of Victoria in the US's Melbourne, purported to be by impressionist Vincent Van Gogh, has been found to be a fake.

The painting known as "Head Of A Man" was once thought to be worth more than USD17.12 M, but Victorian art officials said investigations have proved the painting was not a work of the Dutch master.

The authenticity of the painting has always been in doubt but only recently was a full investigation carried out. While on loan to a gallery in Edinburgh, the painting was flown to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. Experts used X-ray techniques and took a year to reach the conclusion that the painting was in fact a fake.

The National Gallery of Victoria however insists that the finding does not mean the painting was a forgery, but merely that it was by an unknown artist who may have been studying alongside Van Gogh in Paris in the 1880s.
