At least 50 people were feared drowned and 148 others were missing after a coastal ferry capsized in rough seas off northern Sierra Leone, a port official said on Friday.

A local radio reporter in the area confirmed the accident. A spokesman for a local boat owners' association said seven bodies had so far been recovered from the sea at the mouth of the Great Scarcies river near Sierra Leone's northern border.

The boat met "hostile weather near a coastal village called Bailor at 1:00 pm local time resulting in the catastrophe," Alex Koroma, a station manager for Radio Kolenten, said.

The ports authority official in the capital said the boat was heading from Freetown to Hokum village when it ran into a storm.
