At least nine people died and other 60 have been injured after the Interstate 35W bridge that spans the Mississippi River in Minneapolis collapsed on Wednesday evening.
About 20 more people are still missing, newspaper Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.
Between 50 and 60 vehicles were on the bridge when it went down in shortly after 6 p.m. local time. Hundreds of rescue workers and volunteers swarmed to the scene and spent hours sifting through the wreckage in a frantic search for survivors.
A school bus carrying about 60 children was among the vehicles that fell from the bridge. After the collapse it landed on all four of its tires and missing the water as it came to rest near the parkway.
The group managed to escape through the back door of the bus. As a result only few children and at least two adults suffered minor injuries.
Legions of rescue workers and volunteers swarmed to the scene and spent hours sifting through the wreckage in a frantic search for survivors. Authorities said they expected the death toll to rise.
