Scattered rain showers hit western Bulgaria on Tuesday as the heat wave that gripped the country for the past two weeks began to subside.

Capital Sofia saw its first rainfall in three weeks, with maximum temperatures reaching upper 20s.

Cool air and rain will spread to the rest of the country on Wednesday, with temperatures expected to peak at 30C in the Danube plain, compared to more than 40C daily for the past two weeks.

The prolonged heat wave has caused scores of wildfires throughout the country, some of which are still blazing.

Ground water levels have been steadily dropping as well and 600 villages are facing water rationing in the near future, while the Danube is nearly three meters below its usual water level for the start of August.
